I have signed up to the the green site forum 'No Spend Turtles' challenge for June. The aim is to have 20 NSDs in June. It's going to be a major challenge but I think it's worth a shot if it makes me think critically about how I spend my money.

I started doing these a few years ago and they really make a big difference

:D They absolutely do.
Sometimes I'll combine them with whole frugal weeks so I give myself eg: £20 in a week to spend and limit it at that. The no spend days are crucial when doing this.

like some other people have said, I don't tend to plan no spend days they just sort of happen. It helps that there isn't a shop close enough to work that I can nip out to to get lunch so I have to make sure I take something. I usually make sure I have enough lunch things for the week on a sunday either sandwichy things or I plan to make double of my main meals and take some to work the next day. Then if I can resist the corner shop for some chocolate on an evening then I can often make it the whole working week without spending (other than direct debits etc coming out)

I do try to have no spend days, lol I think that people just think i'm crazy, i'l walk past a shop talking to myself " Pauline you don't need anything from there, don't go in" I can do it if its for me, but if I know my family needs anything, or I see something I know they will like, then I don't listen, and walk straight in. I really need to stop doing that.

Just reading through your posts, this is a great idea, I had never heard of it or really considered it. Been food shopping today so tomorrow will be first conscious NSD, Tuesday the 30th August. Thumbs up

I've just started my money saving plan and this includes at least two no spending days a week! Will at least save me about £10-15 a week!

I'll hopefully increase the nsd to a few more once I see how easy it is!

I do as many NSDs as possible. When I was less in control of my wages I would get to a stage where I would have to calculate how many days I had against how much money was left in my account. I would always work out the spend per day, and then try to do as many NSDs as possible. If I had a budget of £15 per day, with say two weeks left until payday, 3 or 4 NSDs would leave me with £45-60 extra to pay for more expensive spend days, like if I had to fill up my car one day etc. This worked really well for me and enabled me to not go overdrawn but I am pleased to be more in control now to a point where I no longer have to do this.

As a former shopaholic complete no-spend-days are pretty hard to stick to. Even though I don't buy clothes and bags anymore, and have cut down drastically on eating out, takeaway coffees and online shopping, I find myself constantly food shopping, the impulse is hard to resist. I also love buying homewares and getting items 'just in case' I need them in the future. Granted a lot of my shopping is in the likes of Home Bargains, Ikea, Poundland etc so I'm not spending a lot each time, but it adds up and I'm hoping to curb the habit so I'll limit shopping to just the weekend and one or two weekdays.

Plan is to stick to 3 NSDs a week from now on. Today will be my first NSD in a long time. Wish me luck.

May sound a bit strange  but I find just walking around my local area is enjoyable (plus good for my fitness and free!), there are so many streets and parks to discover, I think it's good for my general mood to just to get up and have a walk around.

I don't have too many no spend days as I tend to buy ingredients for meals on a daily basis but since I have been on a budget, I now make a strict shopping list and the aim is not to stray from the list. Before I knew what I needed and would get it but then also spend the same again on 'offers' or things that looked good under the concept of spend to save! Of course that's rubbish really and instead am trying don't buy it and save!

Generally, unless I need to fill up on petrol or get a last minute gift I try to only let myself spend money during the weekend.

I'm not sure that that is a good plan though because it makes the week feel really long and I think you need little things mid-week to look forward to.

I understand how you feel here

I make my own lunch mon-thur but Friday I tend to get something for myself to eat as 5 days a week trying to save money on lunches is enough to drive me mad lol
