Yes, it's gambling.
I've been gambling for years. I spend a few quid each week and have won much more than I've lost overall. It takes a certain type of personality to become totally addicted to gambling and chasing the losses, but for the average person, it's just a bit of fun.
The key thing to remember is to never bet more than you can afford to lose. If you're going to be gutted at losing £1, £5, or £10, then simply don't gamble it. Also, if you lose, don't CHASE the money to win it back. This is when it becomes dangerous for those with addictive personalities.
As for this thread I think I'll join in and properly go for the little wins rather than lumping cash on an unrealistic 12 fold or something.
