So I don't know if anyone has any experience in these things here but thought I'd give it a shot - I might actually start recording a few videos for youtube but I want to do it properly - my current headset is knackered and I wanted a new one anyway AND it's just been my birthday so I have some money to treat myself

I've heard that it is much better to get headphones and mic separate - I have no problem with doing this, I guess I was looking for a headset before as I wanted to use it to chat on skype and things but want something that's going to produce quality sound.

So anyone have any reccomendations or any advice on brands to stay away from at all?

If it is gameplay I don't really think it matters whether you use a headset or separate mic. I use the mic on my turtle beach headset and that is clear enough, I think if you are vlogging or podcasting then a separate mic can be an advantage (I use my camera mic if I make a vlog).

If you want some recording software then I highly recommend Open Broadcaster Software. It's free, really easy to use, streams to Twitch and/or records. It captures almost anything monitor/window/gameplay/camera.

It will mostly be game play, a few others have suggested Turtle Beach but I couldn't get my partners to work on my PC - I could get the sound but it wasn't picking up the microphone :/ I've also heard Razer are a good brand but they've got so many to choose from I have no idea which one would be best!

Thank you for the software suggestion! I have got a full license of FRAPS as it only cost £30 but will definitely down load and try out Open Broadcaster Software especially if it does streaming as well.

This is the set I have: http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/gaming/pc-gaming-accessories/pc-gaming-accessories/gaming-headsets/turtle-beach-earforce-p11-gaming-headset-11978333-pdt.html

No problems yet and they work fine though they are USB and jack so you need to have a usb close to the jack input.

From what I know (and this is purely from a gaming POV) Turtle Beach are the brand to go with if tare just wanting something that is

a) not too costly
b) Works well

The quality of audio I have heard through them has always been very good when I have tried them out
