For me we should have entered lockdown a few weeks ago. This is another half-arsed attempt by Boris and Co, and I'm not even surprised. The lockdown being proposed will undoubtedly bring numbers down, but because of the time lag between infections and deaths we won't really see the benefit until right at the end of the lockdown or a bit after. Obviously it's all about keeping the number of people in hospital at a level that doesn't overwhelm the NHS. Until we get a working vaccine this pattern will be repeated. The other thing is that we can't really expect this lockdown to have as big an impact on the virus, because it is (for now) a shorter period, and it's not as harsh as the first one, since schools and unis are staying open and trades workers will be allowed to work.

I can see the lockdown being extended past 2nd December too if the impact is as limited as I'm expecting. It's quite possible another 2 weeks or more could be added, and then we would be allowed to see family on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Then back to local measures again until the next wave or the vaccine.

If you look at the ZOE results for the last 10 or so days there is a drop off occurring in infections. Part of me feels of Boris just held his nerve with the tier system it would have played out as they hoped (though maybe not at a speed that acceptable to the general public)

Yeah I agree with you that they will add another 2 weeks or so to make coming out of it as late to Christmas as possible

4 weeks lockdown is not going to be enough, I am expecting this lockdown to last up until the new year.

Lets have a look at Florida. Came out of lockdown on 25th sept and lifted all restrictions including no longer making it illegal to refuse to wear a mask. Slight rise in line with what has been seen across the world but bodies not exactly piling up in the streets are they? Neither are they here. Boris should have stuck to his guns, no way we should be in this second farce of a lockdown.

Thing is florida is it is VERY much a sparse / spread out state. The UK is very densely populated which is what's causing us (and more of europe) problems

One would hope that the government could finally get their act in gear and roll this out across the whole country by the time we come out of lockdown. But I won't be holding my breath based on previous promises.

Myself and daughter were told by a nurse a few weeks back that as we are both classed as extremely vulnerable, that we should expect to be invited for a jab sometime in December, if all goes to plan.

The nhs brass / government clearly know SOMETHING but aren’t willing to make it public until they unbind the Oxford and other ones vaccine results

I'm sure they do. It's amazing how often things get 'leaked'. After shielding pretty much since March, we're both getting very impatient to get this sorted ASAP.

BBC Covering Vaccine / Doctors thing now as well

NHS England chief executive Simon Stevens has also been discussing the preparations for a coronavirus vaccine.

He said there were 200 vaccines in development and he believed one or more of those would be available from the first part of next year.

"We're also gearing the NHS up to be ready to make a start on administering Covid vaccines before Christmas, if they become available," he said.

"We reached an agreement with GPs to ensure they will be doing that, and we'll be writing to GP practices this week to get them geared up to start by Christmas if the vaccine becomes available."
