Big day here....all 3 kids back to school. I haven't heard the Fortnite theme tune or the talk of V Bucks or the constant request for snacks. Drop off was strange but adaptable. I'm so please school was able to open up for a little normality. It's my eldest's last year at primary school so it was so important to get them back. Plenty teachers wearing masks, separate desks and staggered start times. Shed loads of sanitising and hand washing so fingers crossed it's all gone well.

New Zealand currently going apeshit over 4 new cases and have locked down the whole of Auckland. For 4 cases!

And they are all from one family apparently. Those guys aren't going to be very popular.

Latest Date from the ZOE Study

The total estimated infections in the UK now stands at 24,131 (as of Aug 12th) which is a drop of 1,542 since the 08 Aug, with an average daily decrease of 514 infected people per day.

The current lowest point we have been at was on 7th July which was 23,978 and is just 153 below where we are at now, I therefore expect we will go below that tomorrow and set a new record for lowest total estimated infected people in the UK since the peak back in March.

Out highest peak recently was on 27th July @ 28,478 (the study has revised that figure slightly since Monday’s update when it was 28,512)

It is a bit concerning. Everyone I speak to (including myself) has been affected in some way (anything from pay cuts to redundancy) and there is just not a lot out there right now.

The question is really when things start to pick up again as it isn't the same as previous recessions. What I was reading earlier suggested it won't be a v shape recovery, but more of a Nike tick. I think the speed of the recovery is going to be dependent on how well we keep infections low and then what we have to do to achieve it. Basically hang in there and see.

Here's this week's Covid-19 deaths by actual day update in hospital and all settings. Nuts to think we were losing 1000+ a day back in march

Have heard the idea of an Universal income being floated about to deal with this recession. No details but what do people think? I have listened to a lot of documentaries about this last year (the idea was in response to the projection of mass job losses due to robotics and AI software) and overall I think it is an interesting concept although the tricky part is pitching it at the right level.

I've been a passionate advocate of UBI for years. Someone much brighter than me did the maths a few years ago and worked out it was significantly cheaper than a) benefits, and b) the paperwork necessary to put people through the benefit system and/or get them into work. Not to mention the sheer human advantage of being given choice. Again, as someone brighter than me once said, money doesn't buy you happiness, but it does buy you choices.

New job due to start in sept, same role as before - Im better off here as well as Im on more pay and on the same hours as before the lockdown - whereas If was at my old job I would be working less hours as they cut everyones hours. Also Im literally working next door to my house. So being made redundant as worked out better.

‪Those people looking for infection numbers to be in the low hundreds each day aren’t grasping that those numbers were artificially low by everyone staying indoors and living miserable lives...‬

Son-in-law woke up with symptoms today. A bit worrying, as he works in a supermarket that had a cluster of cases last week
He had a test this morning, so we've just got to wait for results now.
