So I've just recently joined Upwork, but so far I have not had much luck. I find it all a bit complicated if I'm honest, and I hate the fact you have to use these things called "connects" to apply for jobs when you only start with over 100 and some jobs are at least 16 connects to apply for. After you run out you have to pay to get more.

The first message I got about a job seems to have been from a scammer as they wanted to communicate through the Telegram website, which after reading up on seems to be something of a no-no and basically means scam.

There are also a lot of "payment unverified" jobs which I always stay away from as I think that sounds shady as well.

So all in all not a great start, I just wondered if anyone on here used it? Or had much success with it?

I’ve used it to get designs made for my Etsy shop, but it’s very challenging to find the right artists.

I did briefly try and do work on there myself but I didn’t stick to it. That was before the connects came into play. I didn’t get any jobs but I didn’t really try for very long either.

I've had some decent work through there through the years, but it's very much a race to the bottom now.
There ARE great clients on there though, it's just a case of wading through a lot of shite.

Can anyone explain how to work the time tracker? I take it it is just for hourly jobs?

The whole connects thing is a pain, and those scammers are like weeds in the garden. I usually stick to jobs with verified payments too – better safe than sorry. My advice? Hang in there, keep refining your profile, and be picky about the gigs you go for.

Thanks for the advice. No luck so far, thought I had a job lined up, even got as far as signing the NDA but then that was it, I heard nothing else.

Think it's going to be very hard to get anything decent on it as there are so many very low-paying jobs, as well as the non-verified payments. But I'll follow your advice and keep checking.
