Re: Elections 2016 - Work as a Poll Clerk

[member=481]CubaCat[/member] My PO contacted me a few days ago. In the training, our council say POs should contact their clerks at least a week before but maybe some are a bit more relaxed about it. I forgot to say about drinks. If you know you are somewhere with a fridge you can take milk for tea / coffee etc. Really the PO should be telling you if there's a fridge for food and drink. I am in a school so am lucky. Last election we ate at the table but it was too busy to have a proper break. It was only sandwiches etc. You should have designated breaks if it's quiet tho. My PO is really relaxed about breaks so hopefully yours will be too. Last PCC election one of the clerks made her husband go to the chip shop and bring them in. I'm hoping they do again :) If you're with some good people it's a fun day and easy money. It is tiring tho!

Argh, got called and offered a day friday. Alas I'm meant to be going on a training course friday night for the weekend and she couldn't tell me when they'd finish. Seemed surprised when i told her that sorry 2 days isn't enough notice!

Re: Elections 2016 - Work as a Poll Clerk

About to hit the hay ready for my early start. I still haven't heard from my PO ???. Food-wise I've packed up two lots of sandwiches, fruit, yogurt, crisps and other snacks, plus several bottles of water (and a packet of biscuits to share round). Also got a book, a magazine and a notebook/pen.

Not sure I know what I'm doing with regard to the actual work but I've read the handbook and done the training, so I'm sure I'll pick it up as I go along.

How did you get on [member=481]CubaCat[/member] ?? We had 10% turnout [member=1]Jon[/member] :)
Still feel like been hit by bulldozer though as sitting around for 16hours takes its toll as not normally comfy chairs!!! Luckily, we have a fantastic 5 people at my station so day went really quick! Nobody else doing the EU one tho as they are all on holiday :'(

I had a really good day. Slow but steady stream of voters and nice team. It went quite quickly and we were right by a massive open door so got to (sort of) enjoy the nice weather too!

Would definitely do again!

Re: Elections 2016 - Work as a Poll Clerk

Assuming most of our postal voters voted, our turn out was about 25%. We thought we were quiet but according to a local councillor (who popped in & out constantly throughout the day) we were quite busy! It was surprising how many confused faces there were as voters realised this wasn't the referendum!

Hoping I'm back in the same venue with the same people in June. The other PC was the same as 2015 but the PO was different - much more relaxed than last time! The time went quite quickly really (seemed to go quicker than my proper job!). Hoping I'm at the count next time too.

Re: Elections 2016 - Work as a Poll Clerk

I wasn't selected for the count yesterday, for some reason our council decided to select randomly from people who had sent their letters back. I assume they didn't need so many counters as we were only voting for the police crime commissioner in our area.

I have got the eu election to count for though, that will be a long night as I have work during the day! Just have to fill up on plenty of coffee!

It was fine thanks [member=1169]bordercolliefan[/member], glad you had a good day too. :) The other four I was with were nice and chatty, so the day didn't drag too much. It was relatively quiet until around 6pm, then it was pretty busy until about 9.30pm. We had a 30% turnout.

I haven't had a letter about the EU elections yet - does anyone know when will they be sent out?

Re: Elections 2016 - Work as a Poll Clerk

EU is going to be busy!!

We have a test run in the middle of May which I think all Councils have been asked to do. Basically we pretend to have results and put them into a big database system and it should produce 'results'

We are doing it at midnight to replicate the time that Councils would start declaring results (unless you are Sunderland as then you declare results at 10:01pm lol )

still it's more overtime but all the IT requirements for everything is just killing me at the moment. The level of support for all this is just through the roof lol

the thought of another day is june that starts at 6am and ends at god knows when on the Friday afternoon is just depressing!

Glad you had a good day [member=481]CubaCat[/member]
I have had my confirmation letter for the EU, however, not a position as such. This is because the school where elections are normally held are saying that we can't use the school for the EU. Apparently, they have no inset days left and don't feel they can shut the school so close to the last one. Also, I think councils can struggle to get poll clerks etc and a lot will be on holiday so I think mine might still be trying to sort the logistics etc.
If I were you, I would email or ring the person in charge in your area and ask if you should have heard by now.
Apparently, they are thinking 85% turnout for the referendum  My other half who does the count is thinking about possibly getting home after 9.30am which he did for the general election!
Busy times but good money to be made :)

Probably depends on how organised the council are! Mine seem to send out confirmations for poll clerks about 4 weeks before & counting 1-2 weeks before.

I'm hoping to do both in June. We are a very compact council so hopefully can get counting quickly as the ballot boxes don't have far to come. Don't think any polling station is more than 10 minutes away!

Re: Elections 2016 - Work as a Poll Clerk

I worked as a Poll Clerk last week and we had 62 people turn up all day! And 30 of them were after 6.30pm! Very boring, but hey got to sit in a hall and read my book all day and get paid! Even managed to sit outside in the sun for a bit too. I'm working the referendum as well so no doubt that'll be much busier!

Hi Jon. Do you have a link for Wolverhampton please - I can't find it on the website? Probably too late for the EU election, but worth getting in for the next set of locals.
Thanks

They don't seem to have a dedicated page which is annoying but contact them using this form and ask if they need any help for the EU next month
