We used to do this with 2p coins. Although it may seem like 2p is pretty much nothing, it all adds up over time and I believe we had around £300 after a few months of collecting.

Crikey - we put our copper in a pig & we're pleased if we get £40 in a year!

You've never seen collectors like us. If we have a 2p coin, it goes into our bottle which holds our money. It's literally every single coin we either find or have.

My mate did this and made £1k in very quick time.

I'm not sure I use cash often enough though. We tend to carry next to no cash other than for baby groups and this way we spend only what we really need to.

Perhaps I might make a commitment this year to start some savings, but I am torn as we still have £9k debt to pay off. Saving seems futile, but much of it is on 0% interest (credit cards) or I have agreed with creditors to freeze interest and accept a small monthly payment whilst our earnings remain lower due to having two small children and my partner being on maternity leave or in part-time employment only for the last 2.5 years.

Saving is never futile. Even if you've got a couple of hundred pound saved, it's that bit of security should something go wrong. This is from someone who up until 3yrs ago never had savings & is now very evangelical about it. :)

I have an old pop bottle with 1ps and 5ps in as the 2ps are too big to get through the neck but I think I have a locked tin upstairs so I may start doing this and keep it safe somewhere to stop raiders

This is a great idea, those money boxes you can get at the pound shops etc are great as you can't get into them without a tin opener.
I had one that we had nearly filled with change, and it proved useful when my girlfriend went into Labour, when I asked around the room none of my family had change for the car park. The tin proved my best friend over the next 3 days as the hospital was charging £5 a day for parking (don't even get me started on parking fees)

I've just emptied my tin as I want to use the money to buy some new carpets.

Since the end of August, I've managed to save £696 ;D

What makes it even better, is that 15 of those coins are worth between £10 & £20 each, so they're going on eBay in the next few days. ;D ;D ;D

New tub at the ready, £8 already in there.

£1k is incredible! I think my record was about £160 in change, accumulated from all varieties (down to the pennies!).

My partner and I keep a giant plastic Coke bottle which we put pennies in (because they're brown, sort of coke coloured right?) but don't think we'll be getting to a £1k target anytime soon at this rate!

Let's hope they bring out a Coke 'gold' edition so we'll have an incentive to put those pounds in :p

Hahah I love that Coke bottle. We did well the year we put 5ps in, to look like 'bubbles' in the Coke actually.

My Dad collected 20ps for few years and did REALLY well.

We usually keep all our 1p's, 2p's, 5p's, 10p's and 50p's to one side and use them to pay the window cleaner, bin cleaner and the like. I'm sure they are grateful for the change and it saves running around trying to find the cash when they turn up to collect!

We bought one of those tins a couple of years back. We did save about 700 quid in it actually, but never again. It was getting to the point where the OH would go in my purse and empty it into the tin, and then I would go to buy some bread at the shop and had no bloody money. He then started putting fivers in, tenners, Im sure a twenty quid note found its way in there too. It was getting to the point where he was almost writing himself cheques, just for the tin. I opened it and vowed never again. Too obsessive lol

hahaha, I'm glad you found it funny - I didn't at the time when I was stood in the co-op at the till trying to explain to the till lady that my OH had a rather unhealthy obsession in filling out baked beans tin up, and thats why I had no money. But looking back it is pretty funny lol.

I visit my parents virtually every Sunday and they always give my wee boy £2.00 pocket money. If it is a nice day he will buy a cone at Largs but other than that the money goes into his tin.

He loves the idea that it is now so heavy he struggles to lift it and that it makes one hell of a noise when shaken - no idea how much is in there but once it is full I'm sure he will have plenty of ideas on what it can be spent on (I'm secretly hoping he opts for a PS4 - Just saying ;) )
