How do you cope with the odds fluctuations. Every time I tried place and lay a bet one end or other would drift. I got to the point where I was triple checking everything. Got there in the end but I was only running 5 bets and lays....you guys must be well up in double digits
I usually watch the ITV opening show @ 9.30 and this means I am betting then and this is when the odds are quite good as the bookies and exchanges are loading up their kitties then.

Then for the betting - @Jon will be different (and we all have our own variations), but for me 1/3 of my bets were made ante post (this is during the special bookie preview sessions where they have some nice boosts - make sure they are NRNB) and I don't lay those until nearer the off. 1/3 are boosts and I mostly lay these off at the time (early in the day between 09.30 and 10.30), and the other 1/3 are during the races (particularly if you are doing the Unibet offer)

Thanks...some nice pointers

I'm wary of leaving the lays as it's easy to forget what you've bet (even though I religiously record) I load up the bet. Load up the lay. Recheck the odds. Play the bet the do the lay.

What is Ante post?

fancy way of saying "before the event starts"

I'm getting all lingoed up.

Today I learnt a horses "connections" is a fancy way of saying "the people the steal the money from the horse who just won it"

Ah.....yeah it looks nuts trying to bet once the race has started....every time I blinked the odds moved in sizeable amounts

it is what it is, The sheer amount of money being out on for cheltenham the odds are going to be all over the place, things like Match Catcher helps as you get direct links to THAT particular market bet so with one click you just bash your numbers in and you are done!

This is NOT an advised technique, and SHOULD BE AVOIDED if you don't know what you are doing.
For the laying bit have two different windows open one with the bookie and one with the exchange you can then alt-tab between them (my technique) or have them side by side. This speeds things up

This is betting before the final runners have announced (this is upto 48 hours beforehand usually i.e. betting on the Gold Cup on Tuesday would have classed as Ante Post, whereas betting at 6pm on Wednesday would not be). Ante Post bets are not guaranteed and if a horse pulls out or changes races then you lose the money. NRNB (Non Runner No Bet) is offered by a lot of bookies on big meetings (will be the same for the Aintree week) which means your money is returned if the horse pulls out or is moved. WH are one of the big ones that do not offer NRNB but most of the bookies that have online previews do.

PS - if you are using Smarkets as the exchange and you place a lay bet that has changed in your favour they will adjust the bet automatically to keep the liability the same (if it changes against you they will leave the bet untaken)

Tell you what I started looking into today after watching all the chats with the bookies on the course

CREDIT LINES

They mentioned it a few times that they love the credit lines for Cheltenham which is where punter A goes to said bookie (i don't think we are talking about mainstream bookies here - more N E Bookie type folks' and opens up a loan (line of credit) and bets with that.

I saw that too. I think you would need to be well known to them and a big/regular punter to get it.

You think that but I googled one of the bookie names, went to their website, went to the credit line section and it was a Microsoft Word document you had to fill in about how much you stake on a given week etc and then email it back to them :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

Well that doesn't sound very responsible...

I just find the whole 'on turf' bookie scene fascinating. I've been to the races about 1001 times in my life and as you go up and place your £5 bet and get your slip and then perhaps a payout later on you just have no clue that all these bets are being laid off (not that it matters to the punter but it shows the risk isn't as bad as you think for the bookie) At one point today they showed a bookie who had laid off all the bets with the bookie next door to them and had now 'locked in' a horse at 3/1 as they couldn't afford to change the price!

Yes....I used the match catcher quite a bit but I noticed that sometimes the odds moved so fast that I had to reset the calculator. My more successful bets happened early in the day (5-6am) when there's not much activity. The liquidity wasn't there but I wasn't constantly chasing the odds and trying to find a haven to lay the bet....it was either there or not....whereas later it was there one second gone the next

You can also 'negotiate' with the on course bookie and sometimes get a better price

for me i do the bulk of Cheltenham bets 11-12am

then price boosts after 12pm

and horse refunds if I hit one after that

To clarify......I have the exchange and bet windows open side by side.... So I check one then the other. I place my bet first then lay it....then move to the next bet. No bet gets placed without the lay following. Even so I have had a couple of lay bets unmatched that I've had to fix....no biggie so far but I think I'd panic if it was larger amounts!

I couldn't keep up with market that late in the day.....I was working and also noticed the odds drifting south by at least 2 points on some horses.....might be worth noting for the lay though  :D;)

SAY WHAT??!?!?!?!?!?!?

Never knew that!!!
You may have seen the ITV guy in the betting area doing one today. But when talking to one of the bookies earlier than that they admitted they had agreed a different price with a 'big' punter. If you have a tenner don't expect much, but with a grand I expect you can negotiate

You will get used to it and get to know rules of thumb to re-jig the lay stakes.

ah right yeah so my £5 bet ain't gonna make them change the odds then!!

I wish Matt Chapman was on with the bookies. He was wasted in the 'social stable', he's such a good character for racing which you need as the sport if a very 'by the numbers' thing anyway
