Ugh it was supposed to my kids swimming celebration night with both girls due to pick up awards. As it was cancelled we said we’d hold our own. So I’ve just pretended to enjoy karaoke at home complete with disco light. It’s all so hard to protect them from this. And I’m reading about pubs selling of pints for 25p etc. What’s wrong with people?

They might do that eventually if lots of people apply for UC.
As it stands at the moment I have to bring in my passport, driving licence, bank card and a bank statement. That's all I can remember at the moment but there might be more.
This is fairly standard identification, fraud protection stuff and it wouldn't be a problem if there was no virus.

Just my opinion here but they are not geared up to deal with what is going on at short notice. My concern is that the system will be over whelmed by people applying for UC and the time it takes to process claims will get longer which could result in people getting into financial difficulties which is why I say APPLY NOW what ever your situation.

Completely agree with this, personally I think the government are doing a great job of trying to help, they could do more for self-employed as what they have said might not be an immediate help and the only bit I would add to all of this is YES jump and apply for what you can now, but do ask the questions as you may be better off with UC or better off with tax credits depending on your situation, from what I understand you cannot have both (unless anyone knows different).

I have always liked the idea of a universal basic income even before any of this started as with AI and automation it just meant more and more work would require less and less humans. And a basic income could free people to be able to choose to look after their children and elderly parents, or do things that didn't earn much but were great for society/the world.

You can fill in a form online to see what you are entitled to. I have done it and wont get anything. They go by savings as well. So it is 4 months with what I can earn on line. Luckily there will be little or nothing to spend.

I don't get it...

Nope, can't get UC here either. Smashing. Cheers, and all that for looking after the self-employed. It's not like HMRC don't know to the PENNY what we earn in any given year.

I need to make £600 a month to cover household bills (no longer need travel, hair/beauty, clothes, shoes, make up, going out, my own singing lessons/coaching, teaching studios etc. so that's pretty much halved it...). Can't put any money away for the forseeable, which is a bit of a blow. My new year's resolution was to save at least £300 a month this year.

I reckon if I can get 10-12 teaching hours online a month and a bit extra from the usual, I should be okay.

honestly, I think it's really inspiring how flexible you are being and how quickly you have managed to get into this 'online teaching arena' to hopefully keep your income coming in

you may even find you are able to actually earn MORE due to the fact you are doing it all digitally!

Thank you! I'm bound to lose a few of my regulars. It won't work for everyone (it might not even work for me, although I'll have to *try* to make it work, as I reckon we'll still be social distancing at least periodically for a month or so at a time through to the end of the year and beyond), but I'm hopeful of picking up a few consultations and non-London (even non-UK) students.

yeah it's that 'TRY' thing with me at the moment that's making me try a few things outside my comfort zone as we have to do something as the government are not helping and we have bills to pay!

Emailed Vauxhall finance today about reducing payments / holiday

gonna ring leeds building society as well about the same thing

the wifes gym (virgin active) are no longer taking money

i can handle the drop in pay as long as the drop in bills comes alongside it!

Likewise. Not entirely certain who I can get to give me a payment holiday. I'd look cute trying to get Netflix to drop their fee for a start!

I know I should be trying to save money *now*, but the week after next is pegged for all of that. If I try to do everything at once I think it will just all completely overwhelm me. Get earning first, then look at saving.

is there a reason you think you wouldn't be able to get a payment holiday?

I would have thought no financial institution wants to look bad and not offer one right now!
